Not meant to happen

July 29th, 2008

Today I wanted to go from Mosjøen, via Herringen over the mountain to Tuven and Bleikvasslia. Down to Korgen, and then over Korgfjellet, to Elsfjorden and back to Mosjøen. I started out in very nice weather with my mountain bike, two bottles of lemonade and some peanuts.

This is the planned route, where the very bad pink line shows the route where it is road, both tarmac and gravel. Then the red dotted line connecting the pink line indicates that this is a path and even "notrack", in fact most of the red line indicates just an old route used many years ago between Vefsn and Bleikvasslia. The path is long gone, and I could not find any track.

After having missed the actual track several times, having to cross the river with my bike, walking in long gras, being stiched by mosquitos, wasps and such I turned back home after three hours. Not being all sure about where to go, and realzing that I would spend at least another five hours, I went back the same way. Managed to cut down the time with almost an hour when going back. When at home I notiched that I had lost my bike computer and one of the bottles (the full one, leaving me with no water the last hour). At one time right before I decided to go home I fell, at the same time turning the bar which made me hit the end of it with my chest. That was for sure not good at all, in fact I'm curretly not able to lift my son Anders without feeling pain. I must admit I was immediatly a bit scared, so I laid down for about a minute.

Various pictures from the ride up to Almdalshola and Stillvassdalen.

No track at all, but I managed to find it on the other side of the river.

A bit further up, facing down the river. I pushed my bike on the track here, did not want to stumble and fall down towards the river. But it was only about 3-400 meters which I needed to walk up to Almdalshola. The rest of the path was "bikeable"

I walked over here, about three-four meters down to the river, and I was not even sure if the brigde would carry me :-)

The cabin at Almdalshola, very nice.

From here, no track. I went all the way up before I turned and headed back home.

I won't try this again with my bike, but I would consider going to Almdalshola several times with my bike. Without rain for a couple of days the singletrack is quite fun.

Taking the tractor for a ride

July 29th, 2008

Here we have two pictures of Loy driving a tractor for the first time in his life. Under the superb guidenance by me he managed to drive it for about 200 meters and park it by the barn. Next time when visiting we must teach him to go in reverse with the trailer mounted as well.

Later I polished the car to my uncle with the help of Loy.

And afterwards we took our time of enjoying a cold beer and talking to Kent on the phone. He was in Sweden with his family.

Bikeride from Mosjøen to Sund

Bikeride from Mosjøen to Sund

I have brought my MTB with me on the vacation, so last Thursday I spent tree hours riding it from my mother to my grandmother at Sund. About 80 kilometres in rain, but the weather was nice and warm so not big deal. The first part from Mosjøen to Korgfjellet is bad, because of bad road and heavy traffic. It was a relief to avoid the tunnel and ride over Korgfjellet.

When I pasted Korgen I took the old road via the center. That also made me pass a part of the road where I for almost 15 years ago scared the living h%¤# out of my cousin Andre

I had way to much speed down this part of the road, started to break before the turn. Luckily the front wheels stopped on top of the hill after passing the small ditch and scaring the rasberrys.

Vacation is started

A week ago we started our vacation, leaving our appartment to my family who is attending Norway Cup. On the first day we drove from Oslo via Kongsvinger, Torsby, Mora to Østersund where we stayed at the very nice Hotel Gamla Teatren http://www.gamlateatern.se/. We did also hook up with my mother & CO. The next day we headed for Lierne, drove by Namskogan and ended up at Mosjøen.

We have seen several milion trees, thats for sure!

Elin realizing that östersund has the largest antique shop in Sweden, just to realize seconds later that our car is packed and we cannot bring even a small plate

Attacked in the morning

July 22nd, 2008

Was just going downstairs to drop a letter in the mailbox to my neighbor. When I got back up again I could feel something on my neck. I raised my hand and tried to remove it when I felt it was something that was crawling. I wiped it away, just to realize that something had stinged me. Here is a video on how to treat such stings http://www.ehow.com/video_3040_treat-wasp-hornet.html

As you can see my neck is red and irritated.

Needless to say, the wasp is ... dead ...

Out on the town

July 21st, 2008

Yesterday I spent the day out on the town together with my brother and sisters. First we went to see the reptiles in Oslo Reptilpark http://www.reptilpark.no/. Quite small, and after just about half an hour we went on to the Museum of Cultural History http://www.khm.uio.no/ We saw all the exhibitions, Jonas wanted to stay there longer, but in respect of Trude and Ingrid we went on. The next stop was the cinema where we watched The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/narnia/ I'm quite sure they french kissed at the end, but my sisters disagree.

Trucker

July 20th, 2008

Yesterday I did my time as a truck driver when I had to take the truck which Elins father had used on Friday back to Oslo from Vestreng. To save time he did not return it after work, but instead let me do it. It has been a while since the last time I drove a big car. But, as always, I managed :-)

Passing Fetsund on my way towards Oslo.

Parked and everything ok

Gardening work this evening

July 18th, 2008

Did some maintenance out in the garden to my in-laws at Vestreng. My first evening this summer spent outside until late doing handy work. Have been a bit to much cycling, but not complaining, because I'm well aware that the story will repeat itself next year :-)

Anyhow, first I had to fill the ditch. Anders have bought a mobile saw, and needed electricity for it, so he used the tractor digger. I used the shovel to move the dirt back.

Then I chopped down some small trees and moved the "lawn" outside the barn.

There is a bat in my kitchen

July 18th, 2008

There's a rat in me kitchen what am I gonna do?
There's a rat in me kitchen what am I gonna go?
I'm gonna fix that rat thats what I'm gonna do,
I'm gonna fix that rat.

Elins mother did a small adjustment to that text earlier today when something was flying around in the kitchen. She was not aware of what it was, she was terrified while the adrenaline was flowing around in her body. She found a stick and hunted it down. Later I opened the plastic bag and found out that it was a bat...so...there was a bat in her kitchen, she knew what to do.

Later another one came out of the chimney in the living room. Elin have never been so scared. I managed to get it inside an ice box before it got all out of the chimney and let it loose outside. Good thing, since they are protected by law which I found out later :-)

The fight against Avena fatua

July 18th, 2008

Today I have been a solider in the war against Avena fatua at Vestreng. The oat which is considered a noxious weed here in Norway. It is boring for sure, going there in the field, bending down trying to spot the oat, but the law say that we must do it. If you are in to Norwegian you can read the law here http://www.regelhjelp.no/Templates/Emne____6870.aspx

Anders, Elin's father walking around.

And here I found one which I picked and carried back home in a plastic bag. Later we will burn it.

New old cellphone

July 18th, 2008
New old cellphone

I had to replace my old phone, the Nokia 5500 Sport. The microphone did not function properly anymore, so people did not hear what I said. So yesterday I went out to the office to pick up a Nokia N73 which was just lying there. Spent about two-three hours all in all, and then I was back up running again. Thanks to the Nokia PC-suite it was easy to transfer my contacts. Just take a backup from the old phone, and do a restore on the new one. The data cable I bought for the old one fits the new one as well, that helps a lot when doing such work. I also upgraded the software on the phone.

The camera on the new one is quite good, 3,2 MP. Apart from that I do not need the new functionality. I guess I will miss the size of the old one, this one is bigger. Also the fact that the old one was meant to cope with more outdoor use than this one. Hope it will last at least a year, since it is exactly a year since I bought the old one /blog/index.php/2007/07/05/new_cellphone_nokia_5500_sport

Tested the camera, here you have me and Anders.

Why worry?

July 14th, 2008

Have read some articles about the new Opera here in Oslo where it gets criticized for not being well formed for disabled persons, in this case the blinds. Here is one of those articles
http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/article2533569.ece

I must say that I agree when it comes to the interior of the building, it should be accessible for blind people, but why on earth are they complaining about the exterior? There is only one reason to go up on the roof of the building and that is to enjoy the view...

Want to eat the Spanish Slug?

July 14th, 2008

If you want to get revenge on the Spanish Slug http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_slug, you can actually eat it (yuch!) According to http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/iriks/article2538243.ece you must

1) Put them in salt for 2 or 3 days.
2) Boil them in water for about 3 hours
3) Add taste, garlic, wine or butter
4) Enjoy!

Spanish Slug is know as the Iberiasneglen in Norway, or Brunsegl. The latin name is Arion lusitanicus.

Friday - Bicycling to Moss with Hans Jacob

July 13th, 2008

On Friday we went to Moss to visit Sigrid and Vegard. Elin went with the car a day before me and on Friday me and Hans Jacob, the husband to Elin's cousin, went together on our bicycles. We had a nice ride, good weather even though the wind was blowing hard in our face almost the whole way. Half way we had a break and bought strawberry close to Ås. Had to enjoy it, because the last time I went there it was definitely not like that http://www.hellem.org/blog/index.php/2008/04/06/100k-today-in-bad-weather?blog=6

Anyhow, this is the route

And here we are enjoying the strawberrys

Logging machine in the road

July 2nd, 2008

This morning on my way to deliver my car to Leon for polishing I was delayed by this logging machine. Not sure what he had done in our neighborhood. Anyhow, not every day I see this on our street, in fact, I have never seen it before.

Here you can see a logging machine in action
