The King of Kong

After a tip from Atle I bought “The King of Kong“. If you found “The Story of Anvil” worth watching, you will really enjoy The King of Kong. How can someone put so much effort into video games is beyond belief is you ask me. Some disputed facts of course when it comes to how the movie presents the story, but hey…you don’t ruin a good story with facts.

…but, now there is a new record set http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=2&gi=3852&vi=22

New crank mounted on my commuter

Two days ago when biking from Ullevål back home, just about 400 meters from Spinn at Storo my bike broke down. The crank gear had a massive breakdown. As the picture shows, on the left just after the break down, the pedal is way to much to the left. Compare it with the picture to the right where the new crank is mounted it has a lot more space between the pedal and the frame. It started making noises on my way to Ullevål, and when I had to take a quick ride to work I was afraid that something would break down when at high speed. So I went slow and did not stand up at all, afraid that it would break down and make me fly over the handle bars. When the total breakdown was a fact it was not possible at all to use it, I had to walk the last bit. The original plan was to buy a new crank and fix it myself when at home, but no I did not bother. Luckily Pål Andre was present, so I was allowed to hand them the bike the very same day. That was on Monday, on Tuesday they where finished with it, but I was not able to pick it up before today. Now running smooth!!

Drinking on kid’s tv show?

Anders was watching a cartoon on the morning tv show, when I realized that there was a hidden message trying to promote alcohol (could not possibly be something else)…an owl sitting with a green bottle, definitely beer or wine…scary, someone please notify Nyhetsspeilet

Me and Iver

My second son was born yesterday, named Iver. Everything according to plan, healthy and hungry…

Iver er en variant av mannsnavnet Ivar som har opprinnelse i det norreøne navnet Ívarr, dannet av det norrøne ordene ýr, «barlind», og harjaR, «kriger». Wikipedia

Russ – I’m getting old

I’ve marked the map where I live and where the Russ have their party right now at Tryvann. By car that is 22 km, but still I have no problems hearing the music they are playing. And if I go out to the balcony I am able to hear what song it is. The reason for this is that they are using the same equipment as they use on the orange stage at Roskilde. They might do whatever they want to, but when it annoys me, 20 kilometers away from them…it pisses me of and makes me realize that I’m a married man, with two kids and a station wagon…getting old that is…but, I do not hesitate to admit it…

Ships at the harbor today

On my way to work today I had to stop and take a picture of KNM «Fridtjof Nansen» and KNM «Helge Ingstad» down at the harbor.

There was also another ship just outside Aker Brygge. Had some trouble reading the name of the ship on the picture, so I had to do some investigation to figure it out. So, checking the Oslo Port Authority website. I managed to miss “todays calls” at once, so I found http://marinetraffic.com/ais Quite similar to http://www.flightradar24.com/. Marinetraffic showing vessel positions, you can view all types of vessels, from small fishing boats to big cargo vessels. Could not find the vessel, but back to Oslo Port Authority I found “todays calls” and there the name of the ship “Songa Winds“.

Bilia at Fornebu – that little extra

Had my car at Bilia at Fornebu yesterday for the 60.000 service. Everything according to our agreement, the service and some stuff I extra I had asked for, such as air conditioning anti-bacterial cleaning. They gave me a good explanation of what was done, I did pay (off course, it should have been a lot cheaper 🙂 ) and went out to find my car.

I had planned to wash it before leaving it there, but I did not get the time, but not to worry. Here is how my car looked when I found it at the parking lot…all nice and clean! They had washed it…that little extra!

From Lindesnes to Nordkapp with bicycle V

Yesterday was my fiftieth time going to work with my bike this year, and also the fifth leg on my virtual trip to Nordkapp from Lindesnes. I have now arrived at Arnes in Ballangen. Apparently not the place to be, since the only thing I have been able to find out about the place using Google is…the weather forecast at Yr.no.

On my way to work, just as I have passed E18 using the footbridge close to the Opera I have taken picture of graffiti with a message. “Utrydd bananflua!” – “Exterminate the fruit fly

Bash – Insert content of one file into another file

Had to insert a XML-snippet into another XML-file at a given location in a Bash-script. Reading the snippet into a variable is quite easy, just by using cat. The trouble was how to find the tag to replace most efficiently, then replace it with the xml-snippet. Learned that reading the file content using stdin/stdout in a bash-script can cause side effects not easy to figure out, so that was no option. Instead I first tried to use sed, but sed had problems with the fact that the content of the snippet is XML-code. So instead with good help from Geir we ended up using Perl, which made it all very simple – everything done in just 2 lines of code.

First it searches for <!– END jaas –> then replaces the string with the content of the snippet variable and lt;!– END jaas –>

value=$(cat jaas_snippet.xml)
perl -pi -e "s#<!--\sEND\sjaas\s-->#${value}\n\t\t<!-- END jaas -->#" jaas.xml

Comments:

  • Using # instead of ` – while struggling with XML in the variable $value
  • \s = whitespace, like \n is newline and \t is tab
  • Double quote’s so that perl uses the value of the variable, and not just reads it as plain text
  • In this case we expect only one occurrence of the end-tag, so we have skipped the /g parameter at the end of the search-string. /g meaning global, compared to for instance the usage described in my previous blog post at WPC.

Perl is power!
