Back on track again after hosting server being hacked

Yet again http://hellem.org is up and running again after the hosting server was hacked last weekend. No real issues for me apart from a few days of not bothering to update my blog until they had fixed the security hole and rolled back to the needed backup. As I know they did not do anything other than change all index files as described here http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=546049.

Anyhow, I had a backup of my blog, did not loose any information, also thanks to an exact local copy of my folders and files.

Want safer surfing at home?

I’m now testing OpenDNS at home. You get

  • Web Content Filtering
  • Anti Phising
  • Malware protection
  • Whitelist/Blacklist
  • Block P2P, and more…

Have not noticed any drops in speed. Ok, a ping to the DNS server of OpenDNS is slower than to my “real” DNS, but that does not tell the whole story, since you do not surf on pages hosted on your DNS-server. It might also depend on the size of the DNS-cache on the server…have I been told…

A bit confused when it comes to verifying if I’m really using OpenDNS using the webpage http://www.opendns.com/welcome/ but it all turned out to be a need to just restart Firefox combined with a few minutes of waiting time.

Router firmware upgraded

My brother and sister are visiting us this weekend and while my brother is playing some online game I was checking the web console on my WRT54GL for ways to block the gaming. That was when I noticed that my firmware version was 4.30.7, and the latest was 4.30.15…so I decided that it was time to upgrade. Quite easy in fact, just verify hardware version, then download the .bin-file and upload it using the web console. Should work like a charm I my thought was, but nope…”Upgrade failed”, back to the manual. Noticed “Use Internet Explorer or Safari”, I was using Firefox. Fired up Safari, and tried again, about 20 seconds and “Upgrade Successful”, which also included a reboot causing my brother cursing…double success! 🙂

This seasons first descent – Hemsedal

Got my first four days of downhill skiing last week, two days with my colleagues and then two days with Espen and Anders. First picture of me waiting for the bus downtown Oslo last Wednesday resting at the bus stop tired of carrying my enormous bag and two pair of skis.

View from our cabin which was close to Skarsnuten Hotel. Nice weather and it seems to be plenty of snow, sadly not true. No reason doing off-piste, hard and icy conditions with a lot of rocks.

Walking up to Radiohytta on Thursday, someone has forgotten their thermos there and some broken bottles of beer.

Not much snow at all, this picture taken the 3’rd of March, compared to the picture found at Skiinfo from the 15’th of May 2008, no reason to argue, Hemsedal is in desperat need for more snow.

Cross country skiing on Thursday in nice weather, a bit to windy but apart from that very nice. Started from Holdeskaret, did Beihovdløpya, then later Systerskarløypa. The following pictures taken while heading up to what I guess would be Systerskaret. The track is not in mint conditions I would say, but still it was no problem at that point, but while heading trough Systerskaret and down on the other side it was bad. Very bad snow conditions, rocks and such made it hard to ski downhill with my cross country skis, so I do not recommend that track this year.

At work this morning while locking my own bike I noticed this Trek with belt drive next to mine. It was locked, but it would not be hard to open it since the key was in the lock…

Kinda crazy using that bike with those wheels today, due to all the ice on the road.

Dødsdømt og fri – Arvid Møller

Books

Have had a few days of vacation at Sjusjøen, where I found the book “Dødsdømt og fri”, the book about Arnulf Birger Lund, who was part of Milorg during WW2, and was captured by the local Nazis and tortured. The book tells the story about his life before and after the war. Most of all I’m impressed of his ability to make peace after the war with the people who had tortured him.

Cold engine making dirty snow

Today we finished our winter vacation, Elin and the kids have been one week at Sjusjøen, I have been there from Wednesday. Last night it snowed about 10cm of the finest powder so everything was all white and shiny when I backed the car to where I could turn around. I revved up the engine and spun it around. Since the engine was cold that caused quite much exhaust, nothing abnormal, but I must admit that I was a bit surprised to see that a thin layer of exhaust, almost like ash, had covered the snow.
